MITTEL-EUROPA MEETS THE FLAVOR OF ITALY

An experiential journey of history, culture, food & wine through enchanting wine regions of Friuli

Discover the Hidden Charm of Friuli-Venezia Giulia: Italy’s Underrated Wine Gem

Tucked away in northeastern Italy along the Adriatic Sea, Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the country’s most captivating yet least explored wine regions. A delightful blend of cultures and flavors, this enchanting region lies at the crossroads where “Mittel-Europa meets the flavor of Italy,” shaped by the historic Venetian Republic and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

For literary enthusiasts, Friuli is a haven of inspiration, having hosted legends like James Joyce, Stendhal, Pasolini, and Hemingway. Its peaceful, uncrowded landscapes feature manicured vineyards, medieval villages, and stunning classical Italian villas, making it an idyllic escape.

Our journey through Friuli unveils its celebrated “SuperWhites,” fragrant and elegant white wines crafted from varietals such as Friulano, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Malvasia, Picolit, Vitovska, and Ribolla Gialla. The region also boasts unique red varietals, including Schioppettino, Tazzelenghe, Terrano, and Refosco, often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to create complex, spicy, and silky reds. Adding to its charm, Friuli is a leader in the production of “orange” wines, crafted with ancient red-winemaking techniques that lend a distinctive character.

This region is home to visionary winemakers like Mario Schiopetto, Josko Gravner, Alvaro Pecorari, Livio Felluga, Flavio Pontoni, and Edi and Renato Keber, whose expertise has elevated Friuli’s reputation in the wine world.

Beyond wine, Friuli offers unforgettable gastronomic delights, including Prosciutto di San Daniele, cured to perfection where Alpine air meets Adriatic sea breezes. Experience the local tradition of “osmiza,” a convivial gathering where food and wine are enjoyed at communal tables directly with the farmers, offering a taste of Friuli’s authentic hospitality.

Our adventure also takes you to some of Friuli’s most fascinating cultural and historical sites:

  • Trieste: Savor espresso at an elegant Habsburg-era café in this stunning Adriatic port city.
  • Grado: Discover this hidden “Venice” with its serene lagoons and charming canals.
  • Cividale del Friuli: Explore the former Lombard kingdom’s capital and its rich history.
  • Palmanova: Marvel at its impeccably preserved Venetian fortress, a masterpiece of military architecture.
  • Aquileia: Visit the ruins of what was once one of the wealthiest cities of the Early Roman Empire, ravaged by Attila the Hun.
  • Cormòns: Delight in this gourmet village known for its Habsburg architecture, exceptional restaurants, and wineries.
  • The Benedictine Abbey of Rosazzo: Immerse yourself in the tranquility of this ancient spiritual retreat surrounded by vineyards.

Join me for a six-day exploration of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where the sea, mountains, and unspoiled wine country converge to create a truly unforgettable experience. Indulge in extraordinary wines, savor the region’s unique flavors, and uncover the timeless beauty of one of Italy’s best-kept secrets.
